Perfomance at Cal Me Al, The Art School

A fun & fresh goodbye to the year

Exhibition at McLeannan Gallery

The end of our academic year is here and 2nd year painting and print making are installing for our exhibition. My contribution is the same amount of space given by The Glasgow School of Art to me. The sense of frustration has not dimmed with The Art School continually making bad choices for pupils just today our hand in was moved forward but two days before but there’s an inservice day and a mandatory day of workshops leaving us in a panic.

The exhibition install involved a lot of compromise, trying to squeeze 79 pupils work in two galleries of average/small size is annoying. Health and safety told us we weren’t allowed to use the stairs when the years before had but the worst part of GSA exhibitions now is that only other students and staff attend. If you are not in the art school your name needs to be put down on a guest list one day before by a student. The people in the art school already know your work they follow you on Instagram.

The space installed taking inspiration from the day my shitty table broke and destroyed the ceramics I had been working on.

GSA s broken tables create broken ceramics and broken hearts

The installation was a set for performance, during that performance I drank a half bottle of buck fast in around 4 minutes there’s a livestream on Facebook for exact time.

Details included legitimate messages from eBay users and emails back and forth from staff requesting my transfer of departments. Change comes from action and we all need to draw attention to bullshit we see everyday.

79 students crammed into 2 small gallery spaces after 6 months of studio time (an academic year). One crit throughout the year and three 30 minute tutorials. The majority of students work unable to be displayed because of health and safety, even today there is no student access to an exhibition we were told was to be open all week. The space we are given is what we pay £1,820 to £27,750 a year for PLUS loans. The Art School taking in 25% extra students means 25% less time with tutors in an art school where the students feel like an after thought. It’s fucking frustrating.
This is The Glasgow School of Art.
